About Amy
ICF PCC-credentialled coach. Over 20 years in HR and people development. Thoroughly human.
The background
I spent over 20 years working in HR and people development - starting out at Addleshaw Goddard and going on to hold more senior roles at The Co-op and GE. I understand organisations from the inside. I know how they work, what they value, and what they ask of the people in them.
In 2019 I set up Amy Mellor Coaching - partly because I wanted to work differently, and partly because I kept meeting people who were capable, thoughtful, and quietly stuck. People who didn't need someone to tell them what to do. They needed space to think it through properly.
That's still what drives the work. I bring the corporate background so I understand the world my clients are operating in. But I'm not in it with them - which means I can be genuinely objective in a way that a manager, a mentor, or a colleague can't.
How I work
There's no agenda coming in from my side. No worksheet waiting. No framework I'm trying to fit you into. The session goes where you need it to go - I help you work out where that is.
Sessions are confidential, one-to-one, and delivered remotely. For the people who show up ready to think, the shifts tend to be significant and lasting.
"Amy doesn't let you off the hook - but she has a very gentle way of bringing you back to the nub of the issue."
Lucy, client
What I'm trying to create is the conditions for you to think properly. To say something out loud and really hear it. To sit with something difficult without rushing past it. The clarity doesn't always arrive in the session - sometimes it comes a day or two later, when something settles and you find yourself seeing a situation differently, or responding to it in a way you wouldn't have before.
Because knowing something and doing something about it are different things. That gap is where a lot of people get stuck. Part of what we do together is help you move yourself from one to the other.
And the work builds. Sessions deepen over time - what starts as a conversation about a specific challenge often becomes something more significant as trust develops and the thinking goes further.
The human edge
You could get some of this from AI. It would listen, reflect questions back, ask decent follow-ups. For some things, that might be enough.
But there are parts of a coaching conversation that don't come through in text. The thing you almost said. The energy shift when something lands. A pause that allows you to create meaning. Something unexpected that makes you laugh - and then makes you think. The moment you hear yourself say something out loud and know, with real clarity, exactly what you need to do next.
I bring twenty years of understanding what organisations ask of people - the politics, the pressure, the unwritten rules that nobody says out loud. And I bring the things that can't be trained into a model: curiosity, instinct, humour when it's needed, and the ability to stay with something difficult without rushing to resolve it.
That's what I mean when I say the work is human.

I'm an introvert who is also, apparently, quite good at putting people at ease. I'm a mum, a wife, a reluctant runner, and a member of a choir. I have a cockapoo named Teddy.
I love coffee, daffodils, and a good stationery shop. I don't like marmite, pigeons, or being cold.
I don't have it all figured out. I'm still learning, still reading, still trying to blend the many things I've chosen to be. Some of the most useful things I've learned about myself have come later than I expected.
